3D Printer Filaments
Just as baking requires precise ingredients and art requires paint and a canvas, additive manufacturing demands suitable materials for 3D printing. The materials you select will depend on your printing needs, part quantity and production speed, desired 3D printed part properties and your industrial 3D printing equipment. Würth offers a variety of filaments and resins to cater to your specific production requirements.
If you're exploring different materials for your application, don't hesitate to send us a message and feel free to attach the .stl / CAD file of the part you're working on. We'll gladly give a recommendation!
Before diving into the details, you might wonder, "What is the difference between a resin and a filament?" That's a great question!
Filaments are thermoplastic materials that can be melted and extruded for 3D printing a wide range of products using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology. A specific CAD file determines the final product's appearance, and the plastic is melted and extruded through a nozzle accordingly. This material is then applied layer by layer to the print bed until the individual layers form a completed object.
Resins, on the other hand, are liquid materials that solidify into objects when exposed to light in a process called Stereolithography (SLA) or Digital Light Processing (DLP). These synthetic resins are also known as photopolymers. The photosensitive resin is cured using different wavelengths of light to achieve different material properties. They are often used for objects with smooth surfaces, allowing for precise and clean results. Some resins require further curing to achieve desired properties, for which we carry the Dreve PCU 90, an industrial light polymerisation unit for curing high quality parts made of light-curing resins and by means of SL – stereolithography / DLP - digital light processing.
Additive Manufacturing with 3D Printing Materials
Würth Additive Group offers a variety of filaments and resins for 3D printing. Here is an overview of the materials available:
Polymaker provides an extensive selection of filaments, including PolyMide, PolyTerra, PolyLite, PolyMax, and PolyFlex, tailored to your specific needs.
Unlike Polymaker, Loctite focuses solely on producing resins, specifically designed for prototyping and mass production through customization. Loctite's resins are used in SLA and DLP 3D printing processes.
Würth offers Markforged 3D printers, which require use of their own Markforged branded materials. Markforged specializes in continuous fiber reinforcement technology in FFF printing, resulting in strong, lightweight parts. They also offer metal industrial 3D printing with filaments where a metal powder is bound in a filament which is removed after the printing process and then sintered.
3D Printer Filaments – Everything You Need to Know
At Würth Additive Group, we offer an assortment of different types of 3D printer filaments.
Our filament selection covers a variety of applications, with materials including PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, carbon fiber, copper, fiberglass, inconel, kevlar, nylon, Onyx, and a selection of steels. Each material offers unique properties and benefits for specific use cases. For instance, carbon fiber is commonly utilized in sporting goods, robotics, and aviation for its lightweight strength. Fiberglass and Onyx serve as bend-resistant alternatives to carbon fiber. Inconel, a metal alloy, is employed in corrosion resistant and high-temperature applications. Kevlar is frequently used for protective gear and applications where heavy wear is expected. Nylon, a durable and rigid material, is suitable for creating composite materials and can be painted as well and which aren't abrasive like a carbon fiber filled part would be.
